Instroduction

Since 2008, Kolam Institute host some major development projects. We are looking at different areas of technologies and especially the Open ones ! Let's have a tour and discover our goals...

Educational Geo-mapping Project

The "Galaxy" Software project is intended to use geo localisation to produce a knowledge database management tool for all. It comes from the simple idea to locate educational content on geography, we see here a new way of understanding our environment and the world of matter.

We are using OpenLayers, a powerfull Open Source Javascript library dedicated to show tiled maps and add markers and info bubbles. It includes also various map provider such Gmap, Nasa aerial maps,etc...
The application includes several components to edit contents and location as well as an adapted categories structures, the most flexible !

Open Curriculum K12 International

Few years ago, we were looking at Children IT education and discovered the non-sense of teaching classical programs as well as old style practical methods. We also discovered the need to merge computing and social activities, that's why we are offering a new kind of IT courses:

It starts with the basic understanding of communication processes, writing, reading, and math. From these priorities, we use all applications with publishing capabilities. In four words, we teach "how to teach others". This new curriculum includes several parts: Collecting data, compiling, formatting and publishing contents. And at the end, we get to see the presentation ! Here, students are faced with the reality of the group: Can my interest be shared with the others ? And the loop is complete, once the group has accepted that reality, Education is endless.

Open Hardwares Research

Open source hardware (OSHW) consists of physical artifacts of technology designed and offered in the same manner as free and open source software (FOSS). Open source hardware is part of the open source culture movement and applies well as a concept to a variety of components.

The term usually means that information about the hardware is easily discerned. Hardware design (i.e. mechanical drawings, schematics, bill of materials, PCB layout data, HDL source code and integrated circuit layout data), in addition to the software that drives the hardware, are all released with the FOSS approach.

Advanced Visualization

The goal of this project is to provide a range of tools for real time visualisations. It can include city infrastructure, 3D models, CAD and future technologies like Holography and virtual realities. Visualization is any technique for creating images, diagrams, or animations to communicate a message.

Visualization through visual imagery has been an effective way to communicate both abstract and concrete ideas since the dawn of man.

Blender 3D RenderFarm

Blender is an amazing 3D animation package including Game engine and physics. To "render" images, it needs a distributed rendering system. We call it renderfarm ! It is simply a networked infrastructure using processors CPU/GPU to calculate each pixels of the final images. The main benefit is to get the result in a minimum of time !

We are providing a rendering stack of 32 cores to calculate animations/simulations. It is just the beginning of our project wich is to reach 100 cores before end of 2012.

Physics Simulations

It covers various advanced Blender effects, often used to simulate real physical phenomena, such as: Smoke, Rain, Dust, Cloth, Water, Jello. Particle Systems can be used to simulate many things: hair, grass, smoke, flocks. Hair is a subset of the particle system, and can be used for strand-like objects, such as hair, fur, grass, quills, etc.

Soft Bodies and Rigid Bodies can simulate dynamic objects that are fairly rigid. Fluids, which include liquids, gasses and Smoke. Force Fields can modify the behavior of simulations.
